- 1:13Tanzania police arrest opposition leaders to thwart protestsReuters VideosSTORY: Tanzanian police arrested three opposition leaders and a number of supporters again on Monday, their party and police said, over anti-government protests in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam. The main opposition party CHADEMA's chairman Freeman Mbowe was detained on the street. His deputy Tundu Lissu was taken from his home. That was amid plans to demonstrate against alleged killings and abductions of government critics. Both men were also briefly arrested, along with hundreds of supporters, last month. On Monday, CHADEMA said another senior official and a number of party members were also arrested at their offices in Dar es Salaam. Police also took into custody three journalists covering the protests, according to their employers, with no reason given. The police were not immediately available for comment. Rights campaigners say President Samia Suluhu Hassan's government is targeting opponents ahead of local elections in December and a national vote in 2025. Police said in total 14 people were arrested for defying the protest ban. Despite all the pride we feel today due to the good result, we must take this seriously. We must continue the debate after this election campaign. Brandenburg only has a chance if Brandenburg remains a liberal-minded and tolerant state.” The SPD, which has governed the state surrounding the capital Berlin since reunification in 1990, scored 30.9% of the vote, ahead of the far-right Alternative for Germany on 29.2%, in a last-minute comeback, according to provisional official results by the State Electoral Commissioner.2 days ago

- 1:20Sri Lanka picks Marxist-leaning Dissanayake as presidentReuters VideosSTORY: Sri Lanka elected its new president on Sunday (September 22): the Marxist-leaning Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The public put faith in his pledge to fight corruption and bolster a fragile economic recovery, following its worst financial crisis in decades. Dissanayake led from start to finish during the counting of ballots, polling over 42% of the votes. That’s despite not having any political lineage - like some of his rivals in the presidential election. He knocked out incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe and opposition leader Sajith Premadasa to become Sri Lanka's 10th president. The election was also a referendum on Wickremesinghe. He led the heavily indebted nation's fragile economic recovery from a meltdown in 2022. But the austerity measures that were key to this recovery hindered his bid to return to office. He finished third with 17% of the vote. Premadasa, in second place, got almost 33% This election marked the first time in Sri Lanka's history that the presidential race was decided by a second round of counting. That’s after the top two candidates failed to win the mandatory 50% of votes to be declared winner.3 days ago

- 1:22Harris says she is trying to get a second debate with TrumpReuters VideosSTORY: :: September 20, 2024 :: Atlanta, Georgia :: Kamala Harris says she is trying to get a second debate with Trump :: "I'm trying to get another debate. We'll see. But in our debate last week, remember when he said everyone wanted Roe v Wade to be overturned? Well, exactly. I don't know where everyone is either because women have been arrested and charged for miscarriages. They didn't want that." :: Harris also addresses deaths tied to abortion bans in states including Georgia "One in three women in America lives in a state with a Trump abortion ban. This includes Georgia and every state in the South except Virginia. Think about that when you also combine that with what we know has been longstanding neglect around an issue like maternal mortality. Think about that when you compound that with what has been long standing neglect of women in communities with a lack of the adequate resources they need for health care; prenatal, during their pregnancy, postpartum. Think about that. And these hypocrites want to start talking about 'this is in the best interest of women and children'. Well, where have you been? Where have you been when it comes to taking care of the women and children of America." Harris and Trump debated each other for the first time on Sept. 10, in a contest that polls showed was won by the Democratic nominee. Trump last week said he would not participate in another debate against Harris before the Nov. 5 election.4 days ago
