Friedrich Wilhelm Karl Ritter von Hegel [a] (7 June 1813 – 5 December 1901) was a German historian and son of the philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. During his lifetime he was a well-known and well-reputed historian who received many awards and honours. He was one of the major urban historians during the second half of the 19th century.

Er gehörte zu den führenden Stadtgeschichtsforschern in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. In der Geschichtswissenschaft des 20. und beginnenden 21. Jahrhunderts geriet er jedoch in Vergessenheit.

The son of Georg Ludwig Hegel and Maria Magdalena Louisa, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was born on 27 August, 1770 in Stuttgart, the capital of the Duchy of Württemberg. The youngest of six children, only he, his sister Christiane Luise, and his brother Georg Ludwig survived into adulthood.

During his lifetime he was a well-known and highly reputated historian who received many awards and honours, because he was one of the leading urban historians in the second half of the 19th century.
During the Nuremberg years, Hegel met and married Marie von Tucher (1791-1855). They had three children – a daughter who died soon after birth, and two sons, Karl (1813-1901) and Immanuel (1814-91). Hegel had also fathered an illegitimate son, Ludwig, to the wife of his former landlord in Jena.
