He was born on 17 July 1939 as the second of eight children to Seyyed Javad Khamenei and Khadijeh Mirdamadi in Mashhad, Iran. From an early age he attended religious studies at the hawza of Mashhad where his mentors were Sheikh Hashem Qazvini, and Ayatollah Milani.
He was born to an Azeri father (the Iranian Turkish-speaking minority), within a religious family of clerics. His father, Seyed Javad Khamenei, was born in Najaf, a holy city in Iraq, while his mother Khadijeh Mirdamadi, herself, came from a religious family. Second son of eight children, two of his brothers are also clerics.

Seyyed Mohammad Khamenei was born on 25 December 1935 to a religious family in Mashhad. He is the oldest son of Javad Khamenei and Khadijeh Mirdamadi. He is the older brother of current Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei.
After the death of his first wife, he married Khadijeh Mirdamadi , the daughter of Hashem Mirdamadi Najafabadi , from whom he had four sons ( Seyyed Mohammad , Seyyed Ali , Seyyed Hadi and Seyyed Mohammad Hassan ) and a daughter ( Badri , the wife of Sheikh Ali Tehrani ).
