The name, Kiasma, comes from Greek chiasma, meaning “crossing”. The word is used to denote the crossing of nerves and the way chromosomes twist together. Crossings and twists are an integral part of the architecture of Kiasma, notably in the lobby, where two tall concrete walls intersect.
Contemporary art in collections. The collections currently comprise 8,800 works of contemporary art, and about 100 new works are added each year. Kiasma collects art primarily from Finland and nearby regions such as Scandinavia, the Baltic region and Russia.
