Kim was raised an only child in Jersey City by her father who was a theatre actor, and her mother who was a housewife – Kim and her mother often went to watch Kim’s father perform. At the age of 12, Kim began studying opera and practicing her acting, and she was eventually awarded a musical scholarship from Birmingham-Southern College in Alabama. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in musical theatre in 1990, and then launched her career as a stage actress when she portrayed Minnie Dove Charles in the play “Flyin’ West”, performed at the Alliance Theatre located in Atlanta in Georgia. Kim then moved to New York City, where she appeared in her first Broadway play “The Life”, portraying the lead character Queen.
