The myth where Kronos becomes king of the islands of the blessed first appears in Hesiod in his Works and Days, and was also mentioned by Pindar centuries later, so it appears to be an ancient part of Greek mythology, although it does not appear in all myths of course, and I don't think it was due to Kronos merging with Saturn.
