Kirkcaldy ( Scottish Gaelic: Cathair Chaladinn) is a former royal burgh and town. Known as one of Scotland's "most ancient burghs", the area surrounding the modern town has a history dating as far back as between 2500 BC and 500 BC as a possible funerary landscape. The town began as a burgh under the control of Dunfermline Abbey.

The town had a recorded population of 49,460 in 2011, making it Fife's second-largest settlement and the 11th most populous settlement in Scotland.
Kirkcaldy is on the east coast mainline which runs from London Kings Cross via York, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Inverkeithing to Kirkcaldy, continuing north to Dundee and Aberdeen. The Caledonian Highland Sleeper runs from London Euston reaching Kirkcaldy around 05:00 en route to Aberdeen, with the southbound train picking up around 22:30.
