I think movie flopped largely because Indian masses wouldn’t connect with an international love story, for the Indian masses a same story with a girl from different state or even Bangladeshi illegal immigrant would have been nice. Probably known as the Hrithik Roshan movie that had Barbara Mori, Kites is a love story about a man on the run finding love and beauty during his run. At first glance, Kites seems your typical romantic movie. For Bollywood standards, however, it is pretty bleak and dark. Which could be the most important reason that most Indians didn't like it.
