L’origine de L’Origine du monde de Gustave Courbet a longtemps contribué à en faire, sinon un chef-d’œuvre inconnu, du moins un chef-d’œuvre confidentiel. Le commanditaire de ce tableau aujourd’hui célèbre était un diplomate ottoman installé à Paris en 1865.
