La Galatea is a pastoral novel, a narrative genre whose protagonists, in the guise of idealised shepherds, tell stories of real love. It is set on the shores of the Tagus River, and its protagonists include Elicio and the rich shepherd Erastro.

La Galatea. Galatea is a novel of Miguel de Cervantes published in 1585 in Alcalá de Henares with the title of First part of Galatea, divided in six books. Ascanio Colonna Is the dedicatario of Galatea, the one who in the decade of 1580 found completing his studies in two Spanish colleges: the University of Alcalá and the University of Salamanca.
Publicada en 1585, La Galatea es la primera e inacabada novela de Miguel de Cervantes. Se suele clasificar como novela pastoril, género en auge durante el Renacimiento; sin embargo, y aunque ciertamente sus personajes son pastores, sirven de hecho al verdadero propósito del autor: hacer un estudio psicológico del amor.
Vida de Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (Cádiz, 1876): "La Galatea de Cervantes á todas las producciones pastoriles sobrepuja en las dotes inventivas. No mentemos esa innumerabilidad de composiciones que aparecieron antes y después de 1584. Comparar con ellas la concepción de Cervantes, sería ofender la memoria de este autor esclarecido" (p. 67).
