Apr 29, 2019 · The LaSalle’s reputation for being a fine-driving automobile began at its inception in 1927. Designed to fill the perceived price gap between Cadillac and Buick, the LaSalle was one of a myriad of General Motors companion cars offered beginning in the 1920s.
It was a simpler, less expensive way to build an engine and, in the long run, the LaSalle unit proved superior in every respect. Of shorter-stroke design than the Cadillac V-8 ( 79.4mm x 125.5mm instead of 79.4mm x 130.2mm ), the 5-liter powerplant was topped by a pair of very handsome, ribbed cylinder heads.
The LaSalle was an automobile product of General Motors Corporation, and sold as a companion marque of Cadillac from 1927 to 1940. The two were linked by similarly-themed names, both being named for explorers— Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac and René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, respectively.

The LaSalle, first designed in 1927 by the talented Harley Earl, was the model to fit between the Cadillac and Oldsmobile brands. Following the success of the early LaSalle, Alfred P. Sloan, head of GM, promoted Earl to head a new design office: GM’s “Art and Color Section.”.
