The Lainzer Tiergarten is a 24.50 km 2 (6,054-acre) wildlife preserve in the southwest corner of Vienna, Austria, 80% of it being covered in woodland. It dates back to 1561, when Ferdinand I created it as a fenced-in hunting ground for his family to use.

Lainzer Tiergarten | Where the Wild Things Are. As hard as it is to find solitude in a city of almost two million, it’s far from impossible: at the Lainzer Tiergarten nature preserve in the 13th and 23rd districts, you can have a whole forest to yourself – barring the occasional wild boar.
Meet deers, boars and wild sheep in a 6,000 acre park just a short ride outside the Vienna city center. The Lainzer Tiergarten or the Lainz Animal Park is perfect for nature and animal lovers. A large part of this wild preserve (80 percent) situated in the city’s 13th district is covered with woodland.
