Georgia native Larry Holmes reigned as world heavyweight boxing champion from June 1978 to September 1985. Holmes successfully defended his title twenty times, more than any heavyweight champion except Joe Louis.
Larry Holmes (born 1949) is a retired American professional boxer. He was nicknamed the Easton Assassin after the area of Pennsylvania where he was raised. Holmes was a world heavyweight champion several times with different organizations, although he never unified the belts. Only Joe Louis made more winning title defenses than Holmes’ 20.
