The twentieth season of the legal drama series Law & Order premiered on NBC on September 25, 2009 and concluded on May 24, 2010. The season consists of 23 episodes. This season aired alongside with season 11 of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and season 9 of Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
This was the final season of Law & Order but in September 2021, a twenty first season was ordered and premiered on February 24, 2022. It is the final season to star Jeremy Sisto, S. Epatha Merkerson, Linus Roache and Alana De La Garza.
In early January 2010, NBC initially announced they were going to renew Law & Order a 21st season, then on May 14, 2010 NBC announced that Law & Order has been canceled after twenty seasons since they have the same thing as a western drama series called Gunsmoke, the longest-running prime-time drama series.
The late announcement of the cancellation resulted in Law & Order not having a "series finale" episode. Had the series continued, it would have been the last to feature S. Epatha Merkerson, who prior to the cancellation announcement had herself announced that she would not return for the 21st season. Merkerson eventually joined the Chicago franchise series Chicago Med in 2015 as Sharon Goodwin.
