One of the first-generation Abstract Expressionists, and a painter whose considerable achievements have been recognized only recently, Lee Krasner was born in Brooklyn, New York. She received art training at Cooper Union, the Art Students League, and the National Academy of Design in New York.

Krasner was born in 1908 in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents fled Russia to escape anti-Semitism and the Russo-Japanese War. Her family practiced Orthodox Judaism and spent a lot of time studying their religion and observing its rituals. Krasner identified as Jewish her entire life, but didn’t practice Judaism as an adult.
