"#DontKillSeanBean" jokes TNT's own in-house, promotional Twitter hashtag. A loving nod to the fact that the famed English actor has met a gruesome end more often than not in the TV and movie roles he's played over his nearly thirty-year career. It's also meant as a reverse assurance that Bean, being billed once again as the lead of a new series, isn't going to himself be the big twist come the end of the fist few episodes. And so rest easy, Bean-atics, TNT's Legends, debuting Wednesday, is going to give you the Sean Bean you both want and deserve.
The Many Deaths of Sean Bean
That doesn't mean the show itself is going to match Bean's presence, though the actor, who plays FBI Agent Martin Odum, just might be enough to carry us through the cliches and rudimentary elements of it all. Odum's a loose canon, but he's allowed to carry on because - you got it - he's the best at what he does. And what does he do exactly? Well, he's the best deep undercover operative the Bureau currently has - delving so far into his alternate identities that co-workers around him narrow their eyes and wonder if he's committed or if he should be committed.
I wouldn't have wanted Bean to play the role with an American accent (though for his undercover work he uses one, and its fun), but his deep Yorkshire dialect does make him a bit of an odd bird for the FBI. It's explained away very quickly with a line about Odum growing up as a military brat overseas, but he's still not a seamless fit.
