Born in Vienna, Leopold was a younger son of Duke Albert II, and younger brother of the Dukes Rudolf IV the Founder and Albert III.

Duke Leopold III fell in battle. His corpse was interred in the abbey at Königsfelden which had been founded to commemorate Albrecht I’s assassination. This monastery came to house the remains of two forceful protagonists from the House of Habsburg whose ambitions were ended by a violent death.

He was just seven years old when he lost his father and became a ward of his eldest brother and overall head of the dynasty, Duke Rudolf IV. The latter sent Leopold when he was still a youth to represent the dynasty in the newly acquired county of Tyrol in order to preserve the interests of the family.
