Born in Vienna, Leopold was a younger son of Duke Albert II, and younger brother of the Dukes Rudolf IV the Founder and Albert III.

Overview. Leopold III. (1075—1136) Quick Reference. (1075–1136), duke of Austria. Born at Gars (Lower Austria) of the Babenberger family and educated by Altmann, bishop of Passau, he inherited the dukedom in 1095 and ruled it for the next forty years.
He was just seven years old when he lost his father and became a ward of his eldest brother and overall head of the dynasty, Duke Rudolf IV. The latter sent Leopold when he was still a youth to represent the dynasty in the newly acquired county of Tyrol in order to preserve the interests of the family.
