Broke and alone, Rhys depended on flickering support from friends and family until she married Leslie’s cousin, Max Hamer, in 1947. Hamer, like Lenglet, was caught in an embezzlement scheme and in 1950 began a two-year sentence at Maidstone Prison.
She returned to England, alone, and married her second husband, the literary agent Leslie Tilden Smith, who had, ironically enough, been recommended to her by Ford.
