Lichtenstein Castle (Schloss Lichtenstein) is a privately owned Gothic Revival castle located in the Swabian Jura of southern Germany. It was designed by Carl Alexander Heideloff and its name means "shining stone" or "bright stone". The castle overlooks the Echaz valley near Honau, Reutlingen in the state of Baden-Württemberg.

Inspired by the novel “Lichtenstein” by Wilhelm Hauff and with the aid of architect Heideloff Count Wilhelm of Württemberg then had a German medieval knight’s castle built in 1840-42. This new construction included the foundation walls of the ancient fortress up to the third floor.

Its unique location – the top of an 800 meters-high cliff – makes it one of the most stunning structures in the region. We visited the castle, so here is its history and how to reach it.
This was our first visit to Lichtenstein Castle, and it didn’t disappoint. The castle is an easy hour drive south of Stuttgart. They have paid parking only 150m from the castle. They have guided tours for €9/adult, which includes a historical walk through 4 rooms of the castle.
