Lincoln, county, south central New Mexico, U.S. It is a rugged region in the Basin and Range Province, with green hills and large plains surrounding and separating high mountain ranges. The plains are eroded, with canyons and the beds of dry streams; the tree-covered mountains include the Sierra.
Lincoln Historic Site. History. Lincoln owes it's existence today to an infamous young man who became known as Billy the Kid. But long before Billy and the events of the Lincoln County War, this area was first home to a group of indigenous people called the Mogollon, followed by the Piros and later the Mescalero Apache.

Today, with its 17 historic structures and Old West feel, Lincoln Historic Site uniquely preserves the town’s construction and character as it was in the 1870s and 1880s. Four of the town’s distinctive Territorial–style adobe buildings are open year-round, while two others operate as seasonal museums.
