In 1924 the name changed to Lon Morris College in honor of the Rev. R.A. (Lon) Morris, a Pittsburg, Texas banker, Methodist lay preacher, and friend of Dr. Alexander who endowed the college with a grant of $10,500.
The later school seals give 1873 as the founding date of Lon Morris College. This was the date that the New Danville Masonic Female Academy (founded 1847) moved to Kilgore, became co-educational, adopted a college prep curriculum, became sectarian Methodist, and changed its name to Alexander Institute to honor its principal, Isaac Alexander.
