Biography King of France from the Carolingian dynasty. Son of Charles the Simple (q.v.) and Eadgifu (q.v.). During his infancy his father was deposed and replaced by Robert I (q.v.), later succeeded by Raoul (q.v.); in 923Charles was captured and his mother fled with Louis to England, hence the epithet of 'Outremer' (over the sea).
