Louis Marie Malle ( French: [ lwi mal]; 30 October 1932 – 23 November 1995) was a French film director, screenwriter, and producer who worked in both French cinema and Hollywood. Described as "eclectic" and "a filmmaker difficult to pin down", Malle made documentaries, romances, period dramas, and thrillers.
Advertisement. "Murmur In the Heart" is the first commercial success in a long time for Malle, who is 39 and became one of the founders of the French New Wave in 1958 with his controversial film "The Lovers." After that came a critical but not a commercial success, "Zazie dans la Metro" in 1961.
Louis Malle at 44 still looks youthful enough to be an older brother of the adolescent hero of "Murmur of the Heart." Yet he was one of the first directors of the French New Wave, that sudden explosion of spontaneity and experimentation in the late 1950s.
