      • A low-budget film or low-budget movie is a motion picture shot with little to no funding from a major film studio or private investor. Many independent films are made on low budgets, but films made on the mainstream circuit with inexperienced or unknown filmmakers can also have low budgets.

Movie fans can always tell when a movie has a huge budget, but sometimes, low-budget movies are so well-done we would never imagine they cost so much less than their peers. That's exactly the case for these movies below.

    • The Blair Witch Project. Directors: Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez. The Blair Witch Project introduced audiences to a new kind of horror movie and set the aesthetic for many that followed.
    • Juno. Director: Jason Reitman. For a small indie film that was made on just a $7.5 million budget, Juno really made a significant impact. The film had such a low budget that Jennifer Garner took a pay cut to keep the costs down.
    • Little Miss Sunshine. Directors: Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. Like Juno, Little Miss Sunshine is an indie film that blew up big time. The movie earned four Oscar nominations and two wins after hitting the screen in 2006.
    • Annabelle. Director: John R. Leonetti. Annabelle was made on a $6.5 million budget and was an absolute hit in theaters, despite some negative reviews from critics.
    • 139 VOTES. Rocky. Premise: An amateur boxer from Philadelphia finds himself with the opportunity to fight the heavy-weight boxing champion of the world.
    • 115 VOTES. Halloween. Premise: After killer Michael Meyers escapes from a nearby mental institution, he goes on a murderous rampage in his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois.
    • 100 VOTES. Mad Max. Premise: As society breaks down due to oil shortages and destruction of the natural landscape, an Australian police officer reconnects to his humanity as he works to take down a violent motorcycle gang.
    • 118 VOTES. Napoleon Dynamite. Premise: A quirky teen with a strange family home dynamic who is alienated at school helps his new friend run for Class President.
    • Upstream Color (2013) Budget : $50,000. I believe along with ‘Under The Skin’, Shane Carruth’s ‘Upstream Color’ is the greatest sci-fi film this century has to offer.
    • A Separation (2011) Budget : $500,000. Asghar Farhadi’s masterpiece, ‘A Separation’ was made for half a million dollars and is the perfect reminder of the impact a profound screenplay has on a film.
    • Primer (2004) Budget: $7000. ‘Primer’ is a super-weird, super-crazy film about garage inventions and time travel. Shane Carruth’s puzzling debut goes about its business assuming that audience is as intelligent as the inventors in the film.
    • Mean Streets (1973) Budget: $500,000. Martin Scorsese’s ferocious second film provides a nice counterpoint to Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece. ‘ The Godfather’ was about the royalty of the underworld crime syndicate, ‘Mean Streets’ is about its commoners.
