La «Môme de Paris». De son vrai nom Édith Giovanna Gassion, Édith Piaf (1915-1963) crée de son vivant sa propre légende populaire : celle d'être née dans la rue, à même le trottoir du 72 rue de Belleville à Paris, sur la pèlerine d'un des deux policiers qui passaient par là (19 décembre 1915).
This nervousness and her height of only 142 centimetres (4 ft 8 in), inspired Leplée to give her the nickname La Môme Piaf, which is Paris slang for "The Waif Sparrow" or "The Little Sparrow". Leplée taught Piaf about stage presence and told her to wear a black dress, which became her trademark apparel.

Apr 2, 2024 · In 1935 Edith Piaf was discovered by a cabaret owner who gave her her first nightclub job. He began calling her “la môme piaf,” Parisian slang for “little sparrow,” a name she later adopted professionally.
Aged about 15, Édith struck out on her own, first taking several short-term jobs, then turning to street singing. The French popular music economy of the 1920s and 1930s centred on Paris and involved three types of venue, though in practice the boundaries between them were unstable.
