The movie is set mostly in Peking, in a world that the visiting diplomat finds even more exotic and mysterious than perhaps he should.
Paris, France, 1968. Rene is watching a performance of Madame Butterfly at the local opera, where his eyes fill with tears. Outside, Rene runs into a riot where pro-Communist students are attacking the police during the so-called Student Riots. Rene returns to his apartment which the decor is austere of Chinese chic.
