Maila Elizabeth Syrjäniemi (December 11, 1922 – January 10, 2008), known professionally as Maila Nurmi, was an American-Finn actress who created the campy 1950s character Vampira. She was raised in Astoria, Oregon , where she worked in tuna and salmon canneries.

Apr 30, 2024 · Nurmi died in Los Angeles in 2008, and is buried at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Her niece, Sandra Niemi, discovered pages of Nurmi’s unfinished autobiography, and Niemi published the book Glamour Ghoul: The Passions and Pain of the Real Vampira, Maila Nurmi in 2021.
