Maine North H.S. (1970-1981) Maine North High School was open from 1970 through the 1980-1981 school year. Maine North served students from Glenview, Des Plaines, and Niles. The school colors were black, gold, and white, and the teams were known as the Norsemen.

Three towns make up the bulk of Maine Township. They include Des Plaines (population 58,720), Park Ridge (population 37,775) and Rosemont (4,224).
The majority of scenes were shot at Maine North High School in Des Plaines, about 20 miles northwest of Chicago itself. The building had been unoccupied since 1981 and was used as the setting for Shermer High School's library and entranceway during filming.

The filmmakers converted the high school gymnasium into the famous library set. Today, the building is no longer a high school at all. It’s used as an Illinois State Police Station.
Maine North opened in November 1970 and the school was home to 1,200 students from Glenview, Des Plaines, and Niles. However, the demographic projections that prompted the construction of Maine North did not come to fruition. An enrollment once projected to reach 3,500 students peaked, instead, at 1,800 in 1976-77.
