Jan 27, 2006 · Overview. In 1933, after leaving Dogville, Grace Margaret Mulligan sees a slave being punished at a cotton farm called Manderlay. Officially, slavery is illegal and Grace stands up against the farmers. She stays with some gangsters in Manderlay and tries to influence the situation.
Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) and her father (Willem Dafoe) having fled Dogville, arrive in Alabama at the gate of a troubled plantation where the abolition of slavery 70 years earlier has been ignored. Disregarding her fathers advice, Grace determines to right this injustice, and stays behind to liberate Manderlay.
