In 1626 Peter Minuit purchased the island from local Indians for 60 guilders worth about 1.5 pounds of silver, later renamed to NYC when transferred to British, played prominent role in nation's early history both militarily and politically, developed as heart of prosperous metropolis by 19th century after opening Erie Canal 1825.
