Founded in 1788, Marietta is alive with history and culture. Along with Putnam, the area was settled by a group of Revolutionary War veterans. “It was the first permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory,” Verhoff said. “It was named for Marie Antoinette of France, who helped so much in the struggle for American independence.”
