Mark Gertler (born Marks Gertler; 9 December 1891 – 23 June 1939) was a British painter of figure subjects, portraits and still-life. His early life and his relationship with Dora Carrington were the inspiration for Gilbert Cannan's novel Mendel.

Mark Gertler (1891–1939) Tate. (b London, 9 Dec. 1891; d London, 23 June 1939). British painter. He was born to poor Polish-Jewish immigrant parents and spoke only Yiddish up to the age of 8. In 1908–12 he studied at the Slade School, where he won several prizes.
His work is held in more than 40 UK collections including the British Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, Southampton City Art Gallery, the Tate and the V&A. Mark Gertler was born the fifth and youngest child of Austrian-Jewish immigrant parents in Spitalfields, London on 9 December 1891.
Nationality British. Birth place London. Death place West Sussex. Mark Gertler was a key figure in early twentieth-century British Art. The child of Polish-Jewish immigrants, Gertler was a talented child. He won a place at Slade School of Art, London, where he studied from 1908 to 1912.
