Mark Rothko (IPA: / ˈ r ɒ θ k oʊ /), Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz until 1940; September 25, 1903 – February 25, 1970), was an American abstract painter. He is best known for his color field paintings that depicted irregular and painterly rectangular regions of color, which he produced from 1949 to 1970.

Mark Rothko is a key figure in Abstract Expressionism, best known for his large color field paintings like No.61 (Rust and Blue) (1953). He was a self-taught painter who reduced his abstractions to a few floating rectangles vertically aligned against a color background. He also painted scenes of the New York subway and co-founded The Ten art group. He created paintings for a Catholic chapel in Houston and committed suicide in 1970.
