Frankenstein is the title character in Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, the prototypical ‘mad scientist’ who creates a monster by which he is eventually killed. The name Frankenstein has become attached to the creature itself, who has become one of the best-known monsters in the history of film.
When not known as the wife of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, she is recognized as the daughter of the celebrated radical writer Mary Wollstonecraft and the equally well-known novelist and political philosopher William Godwin.
