Matilda/Maud was an illegitimate daughter of King John. Her birth date is not known. She was elected Abbess of Barking Abbey in 1247. Her appointment as Abbess was approved by Henry III on 5 August 1247: the entry in the Patent Rolls describes her as "the king's sister, nun of Berking".
