The University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens (300 acres, 121 hectares) includes botanical gardens, natural areas with trails, and several research-quality habitats and is part of the organization Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum. It was established in 1907.
Matthaei Botanical Gardens is a 350-acre site that offers an indoor plant conservatory, classroom and meeting spaces, greenhouse, and outdoor sites for research, display gardens, native plant gardens, natural areas, and ongoing ecological restoration.
Matthaei Botanical Gardens has something for everyone: Outdoor garden spaces featuring bonsai, native plants, and perennials, a garden created just for kids, nearly 3 miles of trails, and an indoor conservatory filled with plants from around the world.
Nice conservatory with three separate houses for tropical, temperate and arid plants. A variety of gardens to explore including bonsai, perennials and great lakes gardens including dunes and prairies. Nature trails for nice hikes/walks and these are open until sunset. Conservatory and gardens close around four.
Leaflet. Our 350 acres include four nature trails, mature woodlands, wetlands, ponds and a tall grass prairie. We have specialty gardens that feature a native Michigan woodland wildflower garden, a shade garden and a perennial and rose garden.

Jan 4, 2024 · Exploring the U-M’s Matthaei Botanical Gardens. The Matthaei Botanical Gardens are full of trails through decorative gardens and multiple native ecosystems. The gardens are dedicated to environmental stewardship and increasing understanding of the natural world. While it is mostly an educational area, there are plenty of great sights to enjoy.
