Mechthild, countess of the Palatinate (in southwestern Germany) and archduchess of Austria, was one of the great patrons of the German humanist movement. Mechtild is also known as Matilda of Nassau. She was Duchess consort of Bavaria, by her marriage to Rudolf I, Duke of Upper Bavaria .
