Melk Abbey (German: Stift Melk) is a Benedictine abbey above the town of Melk, Lower Austria, on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Danube river, adjoining the Wachau valley. The abbey contains the tomb of Saint Coloman of Stockerau and the remains of several members of the House of Babenberg , Austria's first ruling dynasty.

This was a reference to the Els River, which flows at a snail’s pace into the Danube. In the 11th century, Melk was ruled by the Babenberg family.

Between November and March (low season), visits are only possible with a guided tour. We visited Melk in July and opted for the 50-minute guided tour in English (3 EUR extra).
