Billington is "Britain's longest-serving theatre critic" and the author of biographical and critical studies relating to British theatre and the arts.

He began his life as a critic while a student at Oxford University. After graduating in 1961, he wrote reviews for the Liverpool Echo before a stint working at the Lincoln Theatre Company.
