Are you a Grease person, or a Grease 2 person?

Most movie musical aficionados fall into one of those two camps. The purists only have time for Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta singing about their summer nights. Meanwhile, the Grease 2 fans have embraced singing from its song book of dirty ditties about “pollination” and “doing it for our county” while thirsting after Michelle Pfeiffer’s Stephanie Zinone and Maxwell Caulfield’s Michael Carrington.

In terms of cultural impact, Grease has clearly outpaced its sequel. The original was a box office hit back in 1978 and remains to this day an enduring classic. Meanwhile, Grease 2 was released in 1982 and was immediately hammered by poor reviews and terrible ticket sales. But as it happens with so many films over time, Grease 2 has since shed its “bomb” status and is now openly lauded by celebs like Andrew Garfield to the scores of avid fans who show up for group sing-a-long screenings, a la Rocky Horror. And to celebrate the sequel’s 40th anniversary this month, Paramount Home Video is even releasing a limited edition Blu-ray steelbook of Grease 2.

IGN: How did you finally get from New York to the Paramount lot in Hollywood to audition?

MC: When I went to Paramount and did my screen test for Grease, I finished the performance on Saturday night in New York, and flew to Los Angeles on Sunday. I did the screen test on Monday morning. I went in to sing the song from the original, "Alone at a Drive-in Movie."

The wardrobe department gave me a leather jacket to wear. I put my hands in the pockets of the jacket and there was a pack of Lucky Strike cigarettes, [so I’m] thinking that's a cool prop. And then I saw there was a little note in it. I pulled out the note and it was like a little mash note from Olivia Newton-John to John Travolta. I was wearing John Travolta's leather jacket from the original! I thought, "This is preordained."

IGN: Was that where you met Michelle Pfeiffer?

MC: Funnily enough, I didn't screen test with Michelle Pfeiffer. I tested with another couple of actors. One of them I did end up working with years down the line, a lovely gal called Linda Purl.

I was wearing John Travolta's leather jacket from the original! I thought, "This is preordained."
