Michael Curtiz was a Hungarian-born (as Mihaly Kertesz) American director who turned out some of the best-regarded films ever to come out of Hollywood. He received his diploma from the School for Dramatic Arts in Hungary in 1906.

Casablanca won the Academy Award as best picture, Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein, and Howard Koch won the award for their screenplay, and Curtiz won the award for best director. Although conceived of as a “prestige film,” Mission to Moscow (1943) ultimately became one of Warner Brothers’ biggest embarrassments.
