Gies had helped hide the Frank family during the war, and had recovered Anne’s diary from Prinsengracht 263 after they were arrested. She had intended to return it to Anne. Since Anne Frank died at Bergen-Belsen, Gies gave the diary to Otto instead in July 1945.
