Miguel was born in 2002 in Ecuador to Carmen Diaz and Hector Salazar. His father was a criminal with connections to a drug cartel. This dangerous lifestyle forced Carmen, who was pregnant with Miguel, to flee from Ecuador and take refuge in the United States.
An asthmatic and naïve 15 year old teenager with no self-defense reflexes, Miguel is attacked by a group of rich bullies while shopping in a bodega. The group is led by fellow West Valley High School student Kyler. Miguel is shoved into a nearby car but the event is witnessed by the car's owner, who intervenes primarily for the safety of his car.
