Weinstein was born on March 19, 1952, in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens, New York City, [15] to diamond cutter Max Weinstein (1924–1976) [16] and his wife, Miriam ( née Postel; 1926–2016). [16] [17] His family is Jewish, [18] and his maternal grandparents immigrated to the United States from Poland. [19] .

He is the founder and head of Dimension Films, former co-chairman of Miramax Films and The Weinstein Company (TWC), all of which he co-founded with his older brother, Harvey.
