Modesto ( / məˈdɛstoʊ /, Spanish pronunciation: [ moˈðesto]) is the county seat and largest city of Stanislaus County, California, United States. With a population of 218,069 according to 2022 U.S. Census Bureau estimates, it is the 19th largest city in California.

Measuring a square mile, it is bordered by Needham and Downey Streets to the north, Washington Street to the west, Sierra Drive and Morton Boulevard to the south, and Morton Boulevard and Burney Street to the east.
A Brief History of Modesto. Modesto was founded as one of the San Joaquin Valley’s railroad towns. In the late 1860s, Collis Huntington, Leland Stanford, Mark Hopkins, and Charles Crocker (the “Big Four”) announced plans to construct a railroad down the San Joaquin Valley to connect the northern and southern portions of the state.
West Modesto is a census-designated place (CDP) in Stanislaus County, California, United States. The population was 5,682 at the 2010 census, down from 6,096 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Modesto Metropolitan Statistical Area.
