A former San Francisco police detective suffering from an extreme case of obsessive-compulsive disorder is called in to investigate an apparent assassination attempt of a mayoral candidate in which one of his bodyguards is killed.
Monk meets St. Claire, his wife Miranda, and their advisor Gavin Lloyd, and walks to the site of the assassination attempt. He discovers Vasquez was a volunteer for the St. Claire's campaign. He goes to St. Claire campaign headquarters and questions a volunteer about Vasquez.
