Jul 23, 2022 · Monroe is named after a paddle wheeler, the James Monroe, that made a trailblazing voyage up the Ouachita River from the Mississippi, landing here in 1819. The city is a cultural mecca for this corner of the state, with excellent museums, a symphony orchestra and the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
Nov 12, 2023 · Nestled in the state of Louisiana (or Pelican State), Monroe is an awesome city to be in, with many significant old mansions now converted into museums. There is the Biedenharn Museum and Gardens, owned by Mr. Biedenharn, who was the first person to bottle Coca-Cola, and the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo, which has close to 500 wild animals.
Monroe is the largest city in northeast Louisiana, and along with its sister city across the Ouachita River, West Monroe, it is the hub of cultural activity in this part of the state. Monroe was named for a steamboat, the James Monroe.
