Mar 30, 2012 · During one of the assaults, Robert Smith was mortally wounded and died a week later. Buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Jackson, Robert Smith was all of 26 years old. After the war, in 1868, James Smith erected a monument in Greenwood Cemetery to his brother’s memory.
Coming to America in the year 1884, Mr. James Smith, brother of Col. Robert Smith, visited the battlefield at Munfordville and purchased a piece of land on which he contracted to have erected a massive and costly monument in honor of his brother. The monument is a most imposing and beautiful one.
