It is situated between Roundhay and Gledhow on the east and Weetwood on the west, with Chapel Allerton to the south, and Alwoodley to the north.

The 1851 Directory of Leeds refers to the “small village of Moor Allerton or Moortown”, and in 1872 it records the “agricultural hamlet” of Moor Allerton as having “several good residences” and gives the population as 700. By 1900 Moortown had a new Methodist chapel and an elementary school, both on Shadwell Lane.

Moortown is an electoral ward of Leeds City Council in north Leeds, West Yorkshire, covering the suburb of the same name, Meanwood and the southern part of Moor Allerton below the Leeds Outer Ring Road . Councillors since 1973. Alex Sobel represented Moortown ward ( 2012 - 2018 ). Member of Parliament for Leeds North West since 2017.
